Anti-Aging Part 1: Types and Causes
Aging is inevitable, but the effects of aging on our skin can be prevented. Several factors contribute to aging, with genetics being the only cause that you simply cannot change. With every other source being avoidable or controlled, we really can affect how quickly our skin ages. By learning what ages our skin, we can work to prevent and treat it.
Physical Types of Aging:
- Fine lines: small lines that are typically shallow, on face occurring often around the eyes, mouth and forehead
- Wrinkles: longer and deeper lines, also occurring around the eyes, mouth and forehead
- Age Spots: discolorations of the skin caused over time by sun exposure
- Saggy Skin: loose skin typically on eyelids and jowls; caused by loss of collagen and elastin
- Crepiness or Crepey Skin: loose skin that has a dry wrinkled appearance (like crepe paper); often occurs on eyelids and under eyes
- Crow’s Feet: fine lines and wrinkles occurring on the outer edges of eyes
- Smile/Laugh Lines: fine lines and wrinkles occurring around the eyes and mouth
What causes Aging:
- Genetics
- Sun Exposure: over time, UV rays can cause severe damage to skin
- Free Radical/Environmental Damage: Sun exposure, pollution and other air molecules can damage skin.
- Smoking/Exposure to Smoke: Limit exposure to smoke and if you are a smoker, attempt to quit.
- Alcohol Use: Excessive use can lead to permanent damage to blood vessels.
- Lack of Exercise: As your muscles lose their contour, so will your skin. Exercise gets the blood flowing and helps keep you not only healthy, but happy, and a smile helps everyone look better.
- Lack of Sleep: Not only do you feel tired, but you look tired with dark circles and bags underneath your eyes.
- Stress: Over time, the facial expressions you make when you are stressed or upset can actually cause your muscles to conform, creating wrinkles and lines.
- Diet: Your skin needs adequate water and nutrition to stay healthy and glowing, because internal health can truly affect external beauty.
