What are Sulfate-Free Shampoos?
Over the past few years we have all heard about sulfate free shampoos. What exactly are they and why would you need one?
Sulfates are a salt or ester of sulfuric acid. They are often times added to shampoos to help cut through the oils in your hair and create more foaming. Both of which are characteristics in a shampoo we all prefer, but unfortunately there are also negative effects of sulfates.
Almost all of us have experienced the stinging and burning sensation that comes from getting shampoo in your eyes. This is partially due to sulfates. Sulfates have also been known to irritate your scalp and actually damage your hair follicle. There are additional claims that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate can cause cancer, immune system damage, and damage to the skin. However, these are simply claims and the FDA has not banned sulfates from products and there are no firm studies stating that sulfates are unhealthy or cancerous.
However, not all sulfates are created equal. For example, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate has been shown to strip hair of its natural lipids, which are essential to healthy hair. Other sulfates are plant-derived, like Sodium Laureth Sulfate, which is botanically derived coconut oil.
The debate basically comes down to a personal preference. Many choose to purchase sulfate free shampoos simply because they may already have a sensitive scalp, damaged hair, or because of a professional recommendation from their hair stylist to protect their colored or chemically treated hair. Others choose to purchase to be on the safe side since there has been negative attention on the issue. Regardless of the reason, we offer a large selection of sulfate free shampoos for you to choose from.
