AM or PM: When to Use Your Products
Once you’ve figured out which products are best for your skin type, you need to know when it’s best to use them – at morning or night. You will see greater results when you’re using your products at the recommended time of day and in the appropriate amount.
It can be tempting to use too much of a product or use it multiple times a day so you think you’re getting the best results. In reality, you’re wasting product (and money), possibly irritating your skin and not letting it work properly or effectively. A rule of thumb with your regimen is to cleanse, tone, apply products with the thinnest consistency (serums, gels) moving on to thicker products at the end (creams, sunscreens).
Here are a few tips on when to use your products:
- Cleansers & Toners: Cleansing and toning are the first steps to any skincare regimen and should be used both day and night. By properly cleansing, you'll give your skin a blank canvas to better accept further treatments. After cleansing, it is important to balance the pH level of your skin with a toner or stabilizing mist. This will allow the products you apply next to penetrate more effectively, not just sit on top of skin.
- Sunscreen & Moisturizers: You should apply sunscreen EVERY day before sun exposure, and your moisturizer day and night. If you have an SPF moisturizer, you’ll use it during the day, with your reparative or intense moisturizer at night. Sometimes you may want to skip this step, but did you know that dry and damaged skin ages more quickly? Even if you have oily skin, certain formulas are made to balance and control oil.
- Eye Treatments: Many great eye products can be used both day and night, after cleansing, and will depend on the specific product you’re using. Some eye products may be tinted or contain SPF to be used during the day, while heavier formulas are meant for intensive night treatment. It may seem tedious, but putting in the work now will keep your eyes looking youthful and refreshed for years to come.
- Exfoliants, Masks & Peels: Usage will depend on your skin type. Most are recommended to use in the evening, 1-2 times a week, while gentler formulas can be used more often. It’s important to follow the recommended use of your specific product, as using it too often or using too much can aggravate or sensitize your skin. After using your treatment, it is best to follow with a toner or pH-balancing mist to stabilize skin, promoting increased benefits.
- Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid): This product should be applied during your morning routine, as it provides antioxidant protection against environmental damage and aging. When applied before your sunscreen, you’re increasing your daily protection, and your skin will thank you.
- Vitamin A (Retinal, Retinol, or Retinaldehyde): Most treatments are recommended to use at night. Your skin goes through cell renewal during the night, allowing for best results. However many stabilized forms (Retinaldehyde) cause less irritation and can be used during the day. Using Vitamin A products can increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Always read your product directions carefully and always wear your sunscreen during the day!
- AHA/BHA or lightening products: Products containing Salicylic, Glycolic and Lactic Acids or Kojic Acid, Arbutin, and Hydroquinone have many benefits, including high exfoliation. These ingredients will also increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and do not provide antioxidant protection. Due to this, many products are recommended to use at night while some gentler formulas or those containing less acid values may be used both day and night. Also, if applying body products containing these ingredients, do not apply directly after shaving which can cause stinging and burning in these areas. Due to the potency of these ingredients, it is not recommended to use in conjunction with an exfoliant or peel. Always follow your product directions and use a sunscreen during the day to protect your skin from damage or further dark spots.
